When people stand for election in Australian politics I would hope that their commitment is to do what’s best for their constituents and for Australia. That’s all Australians, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.
But that doesn’t seem to be what’s actually happening.
Fatima Payman, a young Muslim woman who had done the usual Labor apprenticeship and worked in the union movement, found herself elected as a senator for Western Australia. Her election was only because of the convoluted way the senate votes work in Australia. But never mind, there she was, in the House. Where it is reported she contributed nothing to any of the Caucus debates where the Labor Party decides its policy. Not even when the war in Gaza was discussed.
It’s important to understand that when the Labor Party has decided on a policy, all members of the party are expected to sing from the same song sheet, regardless of their personal views. So, when Payman decided to cross the floor to support the Greens in a motion to call for a Palestinian state she deliberately and knowingly broke the rules. And said she would do it again.
She has been forced to resign/was ejected from the Labor Party and now sits on the cross bench. Personally, I think if you are no longer a member of the political party you were elected to represent you should get out of parliament. But what’s more important to me is that this young person thought it was more important to support Hamas in Gaza than to work for her electorate (in her case Western Australia) and for her country.
I know what’s happening in Gaza is awful. But what happened on 7th October when Hamas terrorists stormed across the Israeli border and murdered, tortured, raped, burned, and took hostages seems to have been brushed under the carpet as though it didn’t happen. The chant of “from the river to the sea” essentially means the obliteration of Israel. Payman has not condemned Hamas or called for the release of the hostages remaining in Gaza. And all the while, she’s neglecting her constituents. She’s not being paid an excellent salary to champion her own causes. And whatever she and the other pro-Palestinian anti-Semites do in Australia is going to make not one scintilla of difference to what’s happening in the Middle East.
On that note, what are all these pro-Palestinian activists about? What’s the point of scandalising 90% of the country by vandalising the national war memorial? Or Captain Cook’s statue? And why weren’t they marching in support of Ukraine after Putin started his bloody ‘special military operation’? The devastation in Ukraine is as bad as what’s happening in Gaza except we don’t see it on TV every night. The Israelis warn people if they intend to bomb a civilian target and they target their attacks because Hamas tunnels and fighters are hiding in those locations. The Russians on the other hand, attack shopping centres and children’s hospitals because they can. All I can see is that these people attack Israel (the only democratic modern state in the Middle East) because it’s Jewish. And they ignore the fight in Europe because it isn’t.
And now for something completely different, our house is now on the market. https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-qld-kawungan-145485620
We’re hoping it sells quickly and we’ll be able to move to a place with a smaller yard.
